PHBS Promotion Strategy Based Local Wisdom in Merapi Shelter

Background

Sanitation problem in Indonesia based on the result of the basic health research conducted in 2007 is still unsatisfied. Based on the Decree of the minister of health of the Republic of Indonesia number 852/Menkes/SK/IX/2008, the national strategy of community based total sanitation has been estabilished. This strategy is planned to empower the community by ignition method approach. This method is applied through PHBS elocidation socialization on the community. However, the previous elocidation still has low effectiviness. Therefore a more powerful strategy should be created in order to realize the STBM program.

Problem statement

Do PHBS promotion strategy using health card and local wisdom based game at Sakinah Mandiri Shelter affect the level of knowledge and practice of PHBS among people who live there.

Method

The study was an experiment following pre and post test with control group design. The study was conducted at Srunen and Muhammadiyah Cepitsari elementary school which are located at Sakinah Mandiri Shelter, on April to May 2011.  The population of this study was all student at grade 4,5 dan 6 of borh schools. 52 students at Srunen elementary school was choosen as the treatment group and a same number of counterpart student at Muhammadiyah Cepitsari elementary school was the control ones. As the independent variables are the health card and local wisdom based game. Meanwhile the dependent variables are knowledge and practice of PHBS among students.

Result

In the treatment group the different score average of knowledge between pre and post test was 1,6396 and in the control group the same parameter was 0,8654. By using independent t-test both score were significantly different (p-value 0,003). And group the different score average of practice between pre and post test was 1,7885, in the control group the same parameter was 0,4423, and significantly different (p-value 0,000).

Conclusion

The application of health card and local wisdom based game can increase students knowledge and practice of PHBS.

Suggestion

Since it has been proven that the strategy can significantly increase PHBS knowledge and practice among children. It is advised that the strategy could be implemented at different areas in Indonesia with elaborating local cultures and wisdoms.
